This and That

After returning from the Ga coast early Monday morning, I have spent the week cleaning tile floors and the carpet. Yesterday was the GA primary election, and as always Steve (and I) attend the courthouse events after the polls closed. We watched as all the votes were tallied and counted (via a computer). We also spoke with many other Dahlonega folks doing the same thing. The most interesting part for me as the "pants cutting." It is a tradition that the person that wins their position goes on the courthouse steps to have their pants cut off into shorts.
Yesterday I also recieved the wedding pictures. They are all really great (all 1300 of them). I have spend much time in the past 24 hours organizing and deleting. I hope to have some posted on the blog by the first of next week, but other should be on Pictage soon (see first link to right).

Our Micro-cation

We woke up Saturday morning not knowing what to do with the day. Steve really wanted to leave Dahlonega, and I did not want to go shopping, so out of the blue we decided to go to Savannah, Tybee Island and further south on the GA coast. We left around 9:30 and went the long way down via Athens, Washington-Wilkes (to see Steve’s old hunting club) then continued along the back roads to the coast. We drove through Savannah to Tybee Island, and then came back to River Street for a wonderful dinner of Po’Boys. We finally found a room at Howard Johnson, just south of the city.

Sunday we followed the coast line south. We stopped at many small fishing areas and spoke with the locals. I am really hoping we can move our fishing trips here instead of Steinhatchee, FL. We saw lots of marches and swamps, but the highlight of the day was the shrimp boats. We spoke with a really nice gentleman (stupid us did not get his name) that owned and operated a shrimp boat. He and two others were changing the nets, particularly the turtle excluders, in order to keep more of the current medium size shrimp in the nets, but also obeying all laws. They were also sewing up areas where sharks had bitten into the net. Yet the super cool part was when he invited us onto the boat and gave us permission to walk and tour it. He even said he would sell us the boat if we wanted to go into the shrimp business – just call Steve, Forest and me Jenny!

The boat had lots of really neat controls. I did not know much about them, but they really intrigued Steve. There was a small gas stove and oven, a microware, fridge, tiny restroom (no shower) and 2 sets of bunk beds. He said years ago he would take the ship from GA to Texas and back on a three month trip. I did not ask of the details, but I am certain that would have been a tough trip. The boat can run 20 days without coming to shore, but he hopes now to be gone less than a couple of days. Also on another side note the boat consumes 1000 gallons of diesel per week. The cost of business is forceing many to sell out, but I am certain his family has worked with the ocean for many years and he is not giving up (even though he jokes about it). This experience makes me want to pay special attention to the shrimp I purchase and try really hard to purchase wild caught GA shrimp, and I urge everyone else to do the same. All the folks that we saw were local fishmen, not big companies, who are trying to make a living.

My camera was in the truck, so I only have this picture that I took when we left.

We stopped at another marina to have Po’Boy’s for lunch them traveled back to Tybee Island for a walk on the beach and pier. We left town around 7 heading home and made it in about 1am– wow it is great to be young.

Still Playing

Steve and I have been busy playing with our kayaks this past weekend and week. I can finally complete the c to c roll (although I am not great and still need lots of practice). We have also been practicing eskimo rescuses, when needed. I have also spend the week doing post-marriage paperwork, name/address change etc. I also can not believe that I have less than three weeks of summer left. I am mentally preparing myself to finish matting, framing and hanging artwork, decorating, cleaning house, and doing yard work.

Animals, Gridle Shoals and kayak

Over the past few days we have had so exciting sites and adventures. We saw a fawn nursing in the pasture at my grandfathers, a hawk flying with a snake in its claws, and twin fawns at the river crying for their mom, that was hiding from us.

deer drinking water - look at the spots!
We also make a visit to Grindle Shoals. It is one of the largest falls on the Chestatee River.

It was really cool to see this old brace with spikes in it that had washed down the river. I am thinking that it came from the Grindle bridge that had washed out several times over the past 50 years or an old dam that generated power.

Last, but certainly not least, but Steve and I have begun a new hobby-kayaking. Steve has had two other boats before this one, so he has had lots of experience and is a great teacher. I on the other hand have never been in a kayak until Monday. Here you can see that Steve is doing some refresher rolls in his new Wave Sport Big EZ.

Steve rollin up

I am still very much in the learning stage. Steve has to stand beside me when I am rolling so he can help me up, as a result I have no action photos. ( I did roll over twice by myself yesterday!)

I think we will have lots of fun with our new sport, as long as I don't get cold!

Another Saturday Afternoon

Well as you can see I can completely bored although I have thousands of things that need to be done. This is how we are spending our afternoon.

Steve is working on the "new" old jeep. (We sold the red one last Saturday-it was really sad.)
Tut is being lazy in front of the basement door on the cool concrete.
Crates is chilling in his lot.
Savannah is relaxing underneath the tree, keeping an eye on the propery.
And soon we are off to the river for a swim!

Steve's Birthday

Steve's birthday was yesterday. He a recieved his favorite breakfast in bed, a cold poptart and a coke. He was really excited. From the children and I he got a Bob Timberlake travel backpack, an All-Clad frying pan, a life is good trout hat, a life is good t-shirt (in a womens small-not his size, I just kept it for me), a life is good sticker for my truck and an icecream cake. My parents gave him a blue life is good fish hat. Yes, I know we both love Life is Good products, they are of such good quality (www.lifeisgood.com). We concluded the day with a cook out at the river with my family.
